Use these to "tool out" log home chinking and sealants. Spatulas and trowels are instrumental in creating a smooth sealant finish after applying Perma-Chink, Energy-Seal, Woodsman, or Check Mate 2.

Log and Timber Fasteners

We’ve made some changes to our new Log Boss fasteners. At the request of many of our customers we’ve brought the wings back and redesigned the head for better counter sinking and a 5/16” hex head driver.

The wings reduce the friction between the wood and the shank and clear out the splinters created as the fastener pulls down into the wood. This reduces the torque required to set the fastener into place. So if you want a fastener with maximum holding power and superior strength with less work, Log Boss is the answer. These fasteners were specifically designed by Perma-Chink Systems for the construction of log and timber structures. Their 3” long thread provides the grip necessary for pulling even the most difficult logs into place while the larger shank diameter increases the overall strength and pulling power.

Internal Log Sealant

Log Home Gasket Tape is closed-cell, medium density (8 lb.) PVC foam with pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side. Gasket Tape provides a high performance seal against dust, light, air and moisture.

Install Log Home Gasket Tape between log courses during construction to form a uniform seal between the logs. It is flexible and maintains a seal during seasoning of the logs. Log Home Gasket Tape stays pliable from -5°F to 170°F. Gasket Tape is compatible with Shell-Guard and Armor-Guard.

Log Home Gasket Tape is 3/8" thick and available in widths of 3/8", 1/2" and 1" in 25-foot rolls. Consult your log home manufacturer for the correct size for your log package.

Closed-Cell Foam Rope

Backer Rod is extruded closed-cell polyethylene rod that is used in cracks, checks and gaps before filling them with sealants such as Perma-Chink, Energy Seal and Check Mate 2. Caulk joints should not be more than 3/8” thick and Backer Rod provides a way to fill a deep crevice or gap while maintaining the proper sealant thickness for maximum performance. Backer Rod should also be used in checks over 1/4” wide before applying Check Mate 2.

  • Closed cell polyethylene
  • Will not absorb water
  • Heat and cold stable.
  • Should be used to assure proper thickness of sealants including Perma-Chink, Energy Seal and Check Mate 2

Grip Strip - Trapezoidal Foam Backer

Grip Strip is chemically inert closed-cell polyethylene that is shaped to fit between log courses to form a flat surface for the application of Perma-Chink or Energy Seal. This makes it easier to maintain a consistent thickness of sealant across the seam, reducing the amount of sealant required and improving the sealant’s performance.

  • Provides a firm chinking or caulking surface
  • Shape and texture allow it to be easily installed without using staples, nails or glue
  • Repels water
  • Compatible with all commonly available synthetic chinking
  • Helps prevent blistering of chinking surfaces
  • Provides extra insulation against heat loss
  • R-value for Grip Strip: 1.2 for 2.5" & up; .9 for 1.25"-2"; and .6 for 1" & under

Soluable Borate Powder Wood Preservative

Armor-Guard is a concentrated borate powder wood preservative that is effective at inhibiting wood rot and pests such as termite, wood boring beetles, and cartpenter ants. Armor-Guard is fine grained and can be used in its powder form or dissolved fully into water and then applied by brush or spray to bare wood. Armor-Guard protects uninfested wood from wood decay and wood destroying insects. All wood surfaces should be clean before applying borate wood preservatives.

While your log or timber home is being constructed, the edges of crawl spaces, open stud wall cavities, and flooring where base cabinetry will be located will benefit from Armor-Guard treatment in powder form. The powder will stay in those locations long-term and kill cockroaches, carpenter ants, and other wood insects. Armor-Guard powder will still come in handy long after construction is completed as it can be sprinkled into checks and voids before they are sealed.

When Armor-Guard is dissolved into water it can be sprayed onto wood, controlling insect activity and wood decay by diffusing deep into the wood's fibers. Armor-Guard is a very low-toxicity alternative to highly volatile chemical pesticides that can be hazardous to both humans and pets.

(Armor-Guard is not available in Canada)

Borate Rods Against Wood Decay

Cobra™ Rods are a way to spot treat decay prone areas such as log ends that are already coated with a finish.

Once inserted into damp or wet wood, a borate and copper complex in Cobra Rods dissolves and then spreads the active ingredients to the area surrounding the rod. This eliminates active decay fungi and helps prevent rot for 8 to 10 years.

Cobra Rods are 7/16" in diameter and are two inches in length. A 1/2" diameter drill bit is used for installation. The installation holes may be plugged with the accompanying plastic plugs or Energy Seal.

A typical six to eight inch round log end will require two 2” long Cobra Rods inserted within 4 inches of the butt end.

Cobra™ Rods are a trademark of Genics Inc., Spruce Grove, Alberta Canada
